The Island recently scooped top spot in Lonely Planet’s “Top 10 World Cycling Routes. Serious mountain bikers will head straight for Freshwater to try out the single track challenge known as the Seven Hills Killer. On the Island there are over 200 miles of cycling routes from coastal paths to quiet country lanes. The island is famous for some of the best off road routes in the country but equally there are some quite flatter routes for just an enjoyable day in the countryside , it is possible to get a tremendous variety of views on a relatively short ride.

Watersports

Where better to learn a watersport, given that even from the most central point of the island you are only ever 15 minutes away from a beach.

Surfing/ SUP
With the right conditions, Freshwater Bay can offers surfers four-foot (1.3m) waves at up to three-quarter tide. These can swell to eight feet (2.6m) with wave faces twice that height overhead. Because of the rocks these breaks are not for the inexperienced.
Experienced long- and short-boarders head for the very popular Hanover Point in Compton Bay. The beach near Brook Chine is the place to be with windsurfers.
Colwell Bay on the north west coast is more sheltered and popular with stand-up paddle boarders (SUPers). As is Newtown creek, the Yar river both accessible via public slip ways.

In gentler seas… and throughout the year… you will see people in kayaks setting off from Freshwater Bay to paddle round past the Needles to Totland Bay. Take a trip with adventure activities.

The local base for sailing is Yarmouth. There are boat trips to Hurst Castle in summer and rigid inflatable boats (RIBs) to charter. Boat trips to the Needles start at Alum B
Have a day on the Solent in a rib or push the boat out and charter a luxury motor yacht for the day
